Abstract : Regulation of the voltage supplied by certain types of primary batteries is necessary for the proper operation of low-voltage, battery-operated lighted aids to maritime navigation. The incandescent marine signal lamps used in these aids are very sensitive to overvoltage, and their useful life is drastically reduced by the overvoltage provided by fresh air depolarized batteries. One type of regulator intended to limit the effective voltage applied to the lamp is called a switching voltage regulator. Essentially, this device switches on and off rapidly so that the effective voltage applied to the lamp approximates the rated voltage of the lamp. A method is described for evaluating the performance of these switching regulators in the laboratory.
