Abstract : The literature on the effects of sound on man was reviewed for the years 1965-1972. The purpose of the review was to identify the aversive properties of sound which might be exploited in the development of nonlethal (and non-permanently-damaging) weapon systems. The results suggest that, although parameters such as frequency, wave form, and sound pressure level do affect human behavior, further experimental work is needed in the analysis and synthesis of aversive sounds before significant short-term behavioral changes are possible.
