Abstract : Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have been under development for about the past six years. These devices lend themselves to the construction of small, inexpensive delay lines and other wavelength-dependent devices because acoustical waves in solids propagate with a velocity roughly 100,000 times smaller than the speed of light. Surface acoustic wave devices already in commercial use include radar pulse compression filters, precisely shaped bandpass filters for color television, and other communication systems, low noise microwave generators, and various types of coding equipment.
