Abstract : The report discusses the photoelectronic initiation effect in solid explosives. This comprises the simultaneous action of light and an electric field to initiate decomposition and detonation. A mechanism is proposed which concerns the avalanching of charge carriers. Reference is made to experimental data on lead azide.
