Abstract : The paper deals with two chromatin systems, both containing homologous DNA but with widely different template properties. Chromatin isolated from chicken liver and mature erythrocytes has been shown to differ significantly in both chemical and structural properties. From earlier studies differences in solubility, viscosity, nuclease activity and residual RNA content were not paramount for the determination of the divergent template activity properties of the two chromatin systems. Since differences in histone (I and V or f2c) as well as residual non-histone protein content occur, the authors have reexamined the template status of these two chromatin systems by studying, both quantitatively and qualitatively, their template properties before and after treatment with increasing concentrations of buffered salt.
