Abstract : For an activated cathode based on (Ba,Sr,Ca)O, with a ratio of 50:45:5, the static emission, I sub =, decreased, not because of poisoning, but because of a change in the state of the emitter, due to the take-off current. The decrease in the pulse emission was 5-10 times that in I sub =. Similar results were obtained with pure BaO and SrO. The work function phi = phi sub 0 +(d phi/dT)T for BaO and (Ba,Sr,Ca)O is 1.2 + 0.0006T and 1.5 + 0.00055T eV, resp. The current take-off is associated with an increase in phi, but its change under static conditions does not reflect the true picture of the changes in separate local sections of the oxide layer.
