Abstract : New avenues of approach are presented for the overwhelming task of ascertaining the multi-dimensional transient deformation of solids. Waves emanate from impulsive sources and their reflections from boundaries map a strong discontinuity region into the solid. The region is comprised of longitudinal, shear, and head waves, all of which are revealed in the solution by the new method. Two main programs constitute the method: an analytical formulation which is the dominating base, and a numerical integration technique. The analytical part is a kinematical approach, therefore valid for any field equations. It consists of superimposing compatible kinematical relations, existing across strong discontinuity surfaces, on the multi-dimensional theory of characteristics. The dynamical part is constructed of a wave grid and the integration along these paths is carried out numerically via the finite-difference technique. (Modified author abstract)
