Abstract : This report summarizes efforts to develop a near-real-time forecasting technique patterned after the Box-Jenkins methodology, for predicting ionospheric conditions over tactical communications routes up to 500 km in length where the underlying process was found to be nonstationary. The technique, which uses real-time vertical incidence data to prepare near-real-time forecasts for short oblique incidence paths, is now feasible due to the development of small, portable, VI ionospheric sounders, suitable antennas, and mini-computers capable of translating sounder observations into reliable forecasts.
