Abstract : The prototype system for the production process for manufacturing single crystal spinel ribbon (1 in. wide by 0.020 in. thick) from the melt was built and now produces as scheduled. Analytical studies using an X-ray spectrometer provided data on variations of spinel composition with time at melt. Spinel seeds, both in ribbon and rod form, have been grown as properly oriented single crystal material. A large number of crystal growth runs were carried out during this program which served to establish the validity of our overall approach and showed that the only unexpected problem area was a discoloration of the grown ribbons. The significant problem areas which were addressed included discoloration of the ribbon attributed to molybdenum contamination, and the occurrence of large imperfections in the microstructure which was eventually shown to be traceable to the starting material.
