Abstract : Thin films of Ag-Cu alloys over the whole concentration range have been prepared by co-evaporation of the two metals under different conditions. Their crystallographic structure has been thoroughly investigated and the conditions for obtaining metastable solid solutions have been specified. The optical properties of these films have been determined between 0.5 and 6 eV from reflectance and transmittance measurements by two complementary methods. They are analyzed in relation with the electronic structure of the alloys. In particular, the data relative to dilute Ag-Cu alloys has been interpreted in terms of the virtual-bound state model; the position and width of the Cu d-states have been determined. Clustering and phase-separation effects have also been investigated. (Author)
