Abstract : Absorption of electromagnetic waves is studied with regard to the possibilities of eliminating reflections from strongly reflecting bodies. For reflection-free covering of a metal plate suitable dissipative materials have to be arranged in a special manner. A series of particular absorbing structures which are characterized by large bandwidth (reflection coefficient) smaller than 10% within 1:10 frequency range) and small thickness (down to 10-3 wavelengths) has been developed, constructed and tested. The most promising structure is the thin layer of ferromagnetic material absorbing without reflection due to the natural ferromagnetic resonance (between 30 MHz and 1 GHz in ferrites). By several variations of this type reflection-free absorption is made possible down to 4 MHz and up to about 10 GHz. (Modified author abstract)
