Abstract : Up until recently it has been impossible to use more than small (less than 2%) amounts of high-melting metals in aluminum alloys. The use of high-melting components gives the alloy a number of valuable properties. Because coarse primary crystals of intermetallic compounds form in the alloys it is difficult to produce high-quality ingots. The article discusses new methods of producing such ingots--by increasing casting temperatures and decreasing the size of the ingots. Granulation of the melt and treatment of the granules under pressure is a radical new solution and the results of research in this field are presented.
