Abstract : Perfectly polished surfaces of boron carbide (B4C) suitable for critical metallographic examination are not easy to obtain. The extreme hardness of B4C coupled with the extreme softness of the free graphite usually associated with it and the overall brittleness of this ceramic lead to the introduction of artifacts, such as microcracks, which can complicate subsequent metallographic examinations. The method described has proved successful in a research project on B4C and shortens considerably the time required for polishing and etching hot pressed boron carbide.
