Abstract : The sintering rate at a given sintering temperature depends upon a number of factors such as the surface area of pores, the pore spacing, pore size and grain size, the geometric arrangement of pores and grain boundaries and the diffusion coefficients involved. It was the objective of the work presented here to investigate these factors in some detail for the case of third-stage sintering of cold-pressed iron powder. The first section of this paper deals with the experimental determination of the variation of porosity, pore and grain size as a function of sintering time, the second with the influence of pore structure on grain growth and the third with a densification rate equation developed from the results presented in section one.
