Abstract : An error analysis of a transient response of a thermocouple embedded in a finite slab with a heated surface is studied using the finite element numerical analysis. It is shown that in general the measured temperature involves appreicable error, due to property and geometric disturbance. The report analyses the effect of the following parameters: the distance of the hole gase to the heated surface, the size of the hole, and the ratio of thermal diffusivity. For example, in case of constant heat flux if the error in measured temperature is to be kept to within 10% for the diameter of thermocouple being 0.05 of the slab thickness D the hole size d must be kept within twice of the diameter of thermocouple during the transient period.
