Abstract : The object of this paper is to give a concise review of current methods for solving algebraic eigenvalue problems involving matrices so large that they cannot be maintained in array form in the high speed storage of a computer. Topics discussed include the following: Sparse matrix technology; quasi-direct methods; methods that reduce the Rayleigh quotient; and methods based on Krylov sequences.
