Abstract : This study presents a useful technique for determining the disturbances that result from application of dynamic couples at a point beneath the surface of an elastic half space. This problem is of distinct engineering importance because it provides a basis for earthquake modeling. The disturbances from couple sources simulate the elastic motion following a fault dislocation and occurring in the presence of an initial strain state. This study does not defend any particular model but provides an efficient approach for determining the disturbances for any model by superposition of five fundamental 'double force' cases.
