Abstract : The Phase 1 quiet nacelle includes a two-ring acoustically treated inlet, hydraulically powered fan thrust reverser, 3/4 length acoustically treated fan ducts, and revised contour aft translating sleeve. The nacelle retains the standard Boeing 707 primary thrust reverser and tailpipe. An extensive ground test program, both model and full-scale was conducted to establish acoustic and propulsion performance and to confirm the adequacy of the design of the Phase 1 quiet nacelles. Four Phase 1 quiet nacelles were installed on a leased 707-331B airplane. Flight tests were conducted to determine FAR 36 type acoustic data and fuel mileage of the quiet nacelle configured aircraft. Subsequent to the quiet nacelle phase of flying, the airplane was reconfigured to the standard configuration and a similar series of tests were performed thereby permitting a 'back-to-back' comparison.
