Abstract : The Planning Research Corporation (PRC) developed a set of data collection programs to provide operational data about Data Management System (DMS) in the General Comprehensive Operating System (GCOS) environment. The programs (software monitors) collect data on response times, input/output times, job throughput and frequency of DMS module use. Additionally, PRC developed analysis procedures to reduce data so that a DMS could be evaluated, compared to other DMSs, or fine-timed for better performance. This report shows how PRC developed the Imbedded Software monitor package which basically searches the core image of user program modules at execution time and finding calls to subroutines that are to be monitored.
