Abstract : The strength of heat-resistant adhesive-bonded lap joints is increased if a tough, non-heat resistant adhesive is used at the ends of the overlap and a heat-resistant adhesive is used in the middle of the overlap (Combination bonding). With such a combination the bond strength at room temperature is many times that of a joint made with a single, heat-resistant adhesive. With the correct choice of adhesives, the strength of a combination joint can be greater even in the hot condition than that of a joint made with a single adhesive. The amount of the strength increase and the temperature of equal strength depend on the adhesive combination, the length of the overlap and the proportion of the tough adhesive to the length of overlap. In creep and fatigue tests combination joints, at all temperatures, have a longer life than single-adhesive joints under equal loads. (Modified author abstract)
