Abstract : The diameter of the circular waveguide transmitting the TE mode was selected to be 29.7 in. based on possible resonances of higher order modes near cutoff. A multi-conical taper with four taper angles has been designed to connect the 29.7 in. circular guide to the 2.25 in. diameter input circular waveguide. This taper is about 17.5 ft. long and comprises 12 sections. Preliminary experiments have been carried out for developing a welding technique to fabricate reinforced thin-walled circular waveguide. Mode conversion characteristics were investigated using rectangular waveguide test tapers. The spinning dipole mode analyzer has been assembled and will be used to measure mode conversion at the junction between a conical taper and 4.6 in. diameter circular waveguide. A 90 deg miter bend has been designed and is described. (Author)
