Abstract : Further improvements have been made in the high energy injection system. At low beam currents, the accelerator can now be run at the full voltage of 600 kV. The cause of the apparent shorting of the first acceleration stage for currents in excess of 50 to 80 mA has been traced to a potential drop in the voltage dividing resistance chain and a remedy is planned. The poor focus of the beam at higher currents remains; a contributing cause may be plasma and plasma instabilities in the region of the decel electrode. A second ion source and a new ion source test stand incorporating an acceleration stage have been constructed. The delay in the completion of the mirror-cusp containment system has continued as a result of defective material and poor workmanship in the shop of the subcontractor producing the axial field coils. Good progress has been made in developing diagnostic equipment and a resonant cavity method of measuring plasma density looks particularly attractive. In the analytical program results have been obtained in the calculations of exact particle orbits and the first and second adiabatic approximation trajectories. (Author)
