Abstract : Considerable emphasis in this report is given to understanding the varactor parameters of diodes which will be used in a 47 to 94 GHz doubler. The diodes are shown to have an average junction capacitance at zero bias of 0.02 pf and a series resistance of approximately 8 ohms. The capacitance versus voltage characteristic of the diode indicates very little change in capacitance beyond 2 volts in the reverse direction, indicating a step-recovery type characteristic. Typical impedance curves of the varactor diode are included which show the variation of diode impedance as a function of the bias voltage. These measurements indicated a Q at zero bias of at least 14, possibly as high as 20, which would imply a zero bias cutoff frequency of approximately 700 GHz. Results are presented on an attempt to impedance match an RG-99 hybrid tee with two types of matching sections. These matching sections (cone and pyramid sections) both produce impedance matching of the E-arm over a large part of the recommended frequency range for RG-99 waveguide. However, in the frequency range of interest, 91 to 96 GHz, these matching sections were not extremely effective. (Author)
