Abstract : The status of the scientific and technological base relating to evolutions and applications of weldable steels in Europe is reviewed and summarized. The relationship of this base to national capabilities for present and projected engineering utilization of steels in critical applications are evaluated. It is concluded that the European effort has been concentrated on the more conventional steels and that a lag exists and will be retained in the future with respect to novel developments of higher strength materials. Details of mechanical test procedures and of fracture-safe design principles are provided and compared with US practices. (Author)
