Abstract : Interesting characteristics were observed in the digital computer and theoretical analysis of the vacuum expanding beam tube design. This analysis included examination of the low voltage current collection characteristics of a hypothetical radial expanding beam tube under different conditions of geometry and computer plots of the equipotentials, trajectories, and current densities of various radial beam gun configurations in which the distance from the axis of rotation to the cathode was varied. The sum of the present and past analysis of the various vacuum tube geometries shows that the radial expanding beam gun has considerable advantage. Plans now call for construction of a demountable prototype evaluation structure for experimental verification of the present findings and as a basis for an end-item device design. Examination of the 6-in. and 11-in. magnetically switched gas-filled diode devices included measurement of both pulsed field and bias field magnetic control parameters. Although the analysis has shown the magnetic field controls have certain advantageous characteristics, it also appears that this approach will not meet the program requirements. This phase of the program will, therefore, be concluded. (Author)
