Abstract : The purpose of this program is the study and evaluation of the tetrahedron beam geometry for application in microwave tubes. The effect of different beam convergence and thin and thick lenses on the shape of tetrahedron beams is illustrated. Focusing applied to the wide beam dimensions and defocusing to the narrow beam dimensions results in big net focusing effects. With reasonable assumptions it is shown that the average electric or magnetic field strength in quadrupole lenses is by a factor 6 to 9 times smaller than in rotation symmetric electric or magnetic lenses. The difference of focusing in the two dimensions offers the liberty of adjustment of spherical aberration in positive and negative direction to match the space charge field of the electronbeam. Three string type integrating magnetometers for quadrupole lens evaluation have been built and tested. An unexpected effect on oscillating strings in air was found above a certain amplitude linearly excited strings go into a circular spinning motion. (Author)
