Abstract : Study concerns a frequency changer to convert 3200-cps power from the SNAP-50/SPUR generator to 400-cps power for induction pump motors. The cycloconverter method of frequency changing is best suited for frequency changers using silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) with induction motor loads. The cycloconverter can be located some 20 feet away from the a-c generator with little degradation in system performance. The transmission line is quite heavy, however, to keep power losses low. The reliability of the frequency changer is low unless redundant SCR's and control circuits are used. The choice of three-phase or two-phase motors and frequency changer must be based on a thorough analysis of the SNAP-50/SPUR system and its possible modes of failures. The nuclear radiation tolerance of the frequency changer has been established based on available information. It is recommended that radiation tests on components and circuits be performed before finalizing the limits of radiation tolerance.
