Abstract : An MX-883 fuel tank (drawing number A1-P-62) was subjected to structural strength testing to determine the structural deformation and the resultant actual pressure limits. The tank was hydro-statically pressurized with water while making structural deflection measurements. The test data revealed that the area in the vicinity of the top (at mid-length of the tank) exceeded the elastic limit at 145 psi pressure. The circumferential increase at this pressure was 0.123 inches. The remaining sections of the tank exceeded the elastic limit at 155 psi pressure with an average circumferential increase of 0.127 inches. The tank was subjected to a maximum internal pressure of 200 psi. It did not fail at this pressure, but it did not stabilize while under the influence of this constant pressure which was maintained for a period of fifteen minutes; therefore, the test was terminated at this point. The average circumferential increase was 0.186 inches as the result of the test. Dimensional changes measured at various sections on the tank surface are shown. It is recommended that tanks constructed to this particular design material thickness not be subjected to total pressures greater than 140 psi. (Author)
