Abstract : A matrix treatment is given of the linearization of force and torque functions for axisymmetrical spinning shell with rfold symmetry. Formal equivalence of the procedure with that employed by other authors is established and two coefficients not listed before are found to arise as a matter of course. These coefficients are associated with axial force and torque due to propellerlike reaction of the missile with the incident air stream. Some limitations arising because of the hypotheses of linearization and rfold symmetry are discussed, and the conclusion emerges that the cross force and torque terms of the linearized functions do not distinguish any order of symmetry lower than symmetry of revolution r approaches infinity. Thus the approximate solution for the yawing motion given by KelleyMcShane applies only to shell that behave like bodies of revolution. Questions of terminology and choice of dimensional factors are discussed. Finally, a matrix derivation of the coefficient transformation of NielsenSynge is obtained. (Author)
