Abstract : The design goals of a broadband, solid state, Ku-band tripler and the general circuit requirements to obtain these goals are presented. Three multiplier designs are discussed both as to theoretical considerations, structure, design, and resultant performance. Some of the problems encountered in tuning the first basic tripler and structure modifications to relieve some of these problems are discussed. Up to 14% efficiency has been noted with tripler action at discrete frequencies. Two diodes have produced rational fraction multiplication at 12.52 GHz output with a conversion efficiency of 25%. The second structure operated successfully at 24.5% minimum efficiency with a peak efficiency of 38.8% over the required 8% band (30% minimum efficiency for 7.2% band and 35% minimum efficiency for 6% band). A maximum 3 dB power variation was noted as the device was cycled through a -65F to +165F temperature range. Using the cold test and operational data, the diode conversion efficiency was calculated. At 15 GHz the 68.1% measured diode conversion efficiency compares favorably with the theoretically maximum diode conversion efficiency of 78%. From the result, it was determined that the input filter limited the bandwidth and the minimum efficiency measured. (Author)
