Abstract : A photochromic system has been formulated with a luminous optical density over 3.0 in the closed state as weighted by the eye sensitivity (photopic) curve. Open state luminous transmittance with IR and UV filters is approximately 72% and 58% as weighted by the photopic and scotopic eye sensitivity curves respectively. A spectral density of approximately 4.0 is reached in the region from 515 millimicrons to 635 millimicrons. This performance is significantly better than any other system reported in the literature. These results were obtained with a tandem arranged two cell configuration. One cell contained a Sevron Green B - urease solution and the other a pararosanaline-papain solution. Spectral densities of the solutions as a function of flash energy, cell path thickness, and various commercially available flash lamps were evaluated. It was found the protein used in conjunction with the photochromic compound can be used in denatured form and maintain good stability. (Author)
