Abstract : A research program in which work has been carried out on thermodynamic and kinetic studies of the vaporization of metal phosphides and nitrides is summarized. The purpose of the studies has been three fold: (1) determination of the mode of vaporization including identification of the condensed phases and vapor species; (2) measurement of relevant thermodynamic properties; and (3) elucidation of the kinetic aspects (i.e. mechanism) of the vaporization process. The systems which have been studied include gallium nitride, zinc nitride, zinc phosphide, and cadmium phosphide. Techniques which have been utilized include weight loss effusion, torsion effusion, torsion surface vaporization, vapor transport, quartz spiral gauge static measurements, and mass spectrometric measurements.
