Abstract : The Luneberg lens is a device which refracts electromagnetic radiation, much in the same way that an ordinary lens bends light. The difference is that an ordinary lens uses a medium of different index of refraction to bend the rays, while a Luneberg lens uses substances of differing dielectric constant. Three of the plastics used in the making of this unit were presented for temperature and pressure evaluation. The samples tested were Eccofoam-S, Isocyanate foam and Eccosorb-AN-73. On each of these materials tests were conducted to determine the following: The temperature at which the polyfoam softens and the manner in which it softens; The rate of temperature rise through the polyfoam; The effect on the polyfoam of a reduction of atmospheric pressure equivalent to the air pressure at 60,000 ft; The effect on the polyfoam of a reduction of atmospheric pressure equivalent to the air pressure at 60,000 ft; The effect of temperature extremes on the polyfoam.
