Abstract : The testing of single level cells has been completed. While this type of cell has good recharge properties, its discharge characteristics are poor, particularly with respect to initial capacity and capacity maintenance. This system will not be used in the design of the sealed aircraft battery. The cycling of two-level cells containing silver treated cellophane separators is continuing. At the end of 225 cycles, 161 of which have been at 140 F, the cells still exhibit better than 75% of original capacity. When third electrodes are offset from the cadmium negative electrode by a resistance between 5 and 10 ohms, cells do not gas hydrogen on initial charging and up to 20% of nominal capacity may be reinserted into the cell at -30 F. This type of offset will permit the initiation of charge when the battery is cold and will permit time for heating of the unit to a more favorable temperature for completion of the charge cycle. Polarization curves have been obtained for the cadmium negative electrode as well as for new and cycled third electrodes of both the ABX and YEC-50 types. (Author)
