Abstract : Improved methods of optically reading out a two dimensional correlation plane representing range and doppler information on multiple targets in radar systems have been investigated. Included in the investigation were techniques for a solid state micro-array photosensor, adaptive scanning thereof, correlation product integration, velocity matched integration, methods of measuring acceleration, digitization of target parameters, and performing the correlation process itself with an array. A photosensitive array using the excitation storage characteristics of cadmium sulphide or cadmium selenide is used as a readout sensor. This is electrically scanned in range while the velocity line outputs are processed in parallel. A correlated scanning technique was developed for velocity matched target integration without range smearing. Several techniques were developed for screening out targets with non-dangerous acceleration patterns on the basis of analog analysis of the stored excitation trails of the moving targets. A large reduction in digital data rate is achieved by this pre-screening.
