Abstract : The work described in this report is a continuing effort on the determination of the polymeric composition of the LiF vapor which is in equilibrium with the condensed phase. Mass spectrometric technique involving beam modulation and gated detection was used. The experimental methods and the theoretical treatment of this technique have been discussed in the previous quarterly report. A set of equations to describe the LiF system was derived on the basis of the experimental and theoretical data obtained in this study. Since the development of a solution for this set of equations has not been completed, determination of the composition of LiF vapor is not permitted. Therefore, for the present an estimate of this composition is made based on the assumption that the ionization cross sections for the different ion producing processes were the same. Such an estimate shows 68% monomer, 26% dimer and 6% trimer in the LiF vapor at 1160 K and 54% monomer, 40% dimer and 6% trimer at 1245 K. The study of the vaporization of BeO has been completed. The results of this study indicate that either the accepted value for the heat of formation of crystalline BeO is too negative by ca. 3 Kcal/mole, or the vapor over crystalline BeO is richer in gaseous molecular species than has been inferred from mass spectrometric studies.
