Abstract : By the use of a strain-electronic coupling mechanism between an orbital singlet and a triplet we have derived a free energy function and have compared this with experiment. While the qualitative agreement is encouraging, it can not yet be regarded as significant, in the light of the neglect of other competing mechanism. (Author)
