Abstract : The nonlinear elastic response of a thin circular ring when subjected to a uniform step pressure load is determined for a range of ring geometries. The character of this response is related to the phenomenon of parametric resonance and to the occurrence of multiple equilibrium states. Dynamic elastic buckling is considered to have occurred when the response to the step pressure load encompasses the corresponding post-buckled equilibrium state. The cirtical dynamic buckling load is defined as the lowest step pressure load required to produce such a response. The levels of the critical dynamic pressure load are found to be essentially identical to the corresponding critical static buckling load. The critical modes of buckling are associated with the same mode number for both the step pressure and static pressure load cases. (Author)
