Abstract : Detailed studies of the properties of alloys of arc-melted carbides of the Group IVa metals with graphite reveal a strong dependence on the microstructures characteristic of the carbon content. Hypereutectic alloys consisting of primary graphite flakes in a lamellar eutectic matrix of carbide and graphite are shown to possess an inherent capacity for dissipating the elastic energy released during crack propagation. This phenomenon results in an enhanced resistance to failure by thermal shock. (Author)
