Abstract : This contract has been concerned with the synthesis by vapor deposition of continuous filament materials of SiC, TiB2, B4C, B-Si and AlB2. Silicon carbide is the most advanced, and some effort was devoted to controlling its modulus to result in improved metal matrix composites. Multiple thousand foot quantities of SiC filament were produced which had a modulus of 70 + or - 5 x 10 to the 6th power psi and a tensile strength of over 300,000 psi. Some filament having a tensile strength of over 400,000 psi was also produced. Aluminum and chromium coatings were applied in batch to some of the filament materials. (Author)
