Abstract : The object of this study was to generate photographic stimulus material for use in psychophysical studies as applied to aerial photographic interpretation. The stimulus material is in the form of matrix arrays of positive photographic transparencies, the difference between matrices is scene content. Each matrix consists of 16 elements varying in resolution and contrast; all parameters other than these have been kept constant within specified tolerances. The GEM PHOTOGRAPH set was produced using state-of-the-art simulation techniques which are known to yield predictable and accurate results over the range of parameters explored in this program. The evaluation of the final material was accomplished using conventional sensitometric procedures as well as the latest edge-gradient analysis technique. The result is a set of transparencies with precisely known image quality. (Author)
