Abstract : During this program, emphasis was directed at improving the sensitivity and power handling of crystal video detector diodes. In addition, broadband detector mounts and low noise video preamplifiers were developed. Theoretical investigations led to the development of expressions relating diode conversion efficiency and noise behavior to minimum detectable power. The contribution of diode parasitic parameters was included in the theory to provide an accurate high frequency description of the diode as a video detector. These theoretical developments, as well as the concept and theory of the hybrid detector have been experimentally verified and the feasibility of the hybrid concept has been experimentally demonstrated. A broad range of semiconductor materials and a wide variety of whisker compositions have been evaluated. The evaluation included both diode characteristics and performance as a video detector. Several types of junction structures have been experimentally evaluated for use in the hybrid diode structure. A new technique has been evolved for the fabrication of high sensitivity detectors using the technologies of evaporation and alloying. This technique has been experimentally investigated and has been proved potentially useful. A thorough investigation has been made of various measurement techniques applicable to both diode characterization and crystal video detector performance evaluation. A set of high sensitivity diodes, broadband detector mounts and low noise video preamplifiers have been designed, developed, fabricated and tested. Significant ground work has been developed which provides the basis for predicting and developing improved performance high power, high sensitivity crystal video detectors.
