Abstract : An investigation is being conducted to determine the effect of oxide coatings on the mechanical properties of iron wires. Scales have been formed on the wire in the temperature range of 700 to 850 C and the phases in the scale identified by x-ray diffraction. The most desirable oxide coating has been produced at 700 C and P sub H2/P sub H2O = 0.6. Tensile tests have been performed on wires oxidized at 700 and 800 C, (P sub H2/P sub H2O = 0.2, 0.6) and the 700 C, P sub H2/P sub H2O = 0.2 specimen had the best tensile properties. (Author)
