Abstract : Saturation efficiency, gain and length information is presented for large-signal traveling-wave amplifiers as a function of the velocity parameter the magnetic field and the stream diameter. A new normalization of the working equations in the Boltzmann-Vlasov analysis is developed in order to simplify their solution on a digital computer. The closed-form solution of the TWA nonlinear interaction equations is developed further and a simplified system is presented. The solution of the radial force equation and the radial wave equation is explored in detail. Plotting programs for the electron gun computer programs are developed and further progress has been made on the analysis of the magnetron injection gun. In view of the low noise figures (15 db for 1400 watts of beam power) obtained in the UHF amplifier employing a magnetron injection gun it has been decided to modify the tube in order to more closely control the potential distirbution in the gun region. A small-signal analysis of the two-dimensional relativistic TWA is developed for Brillouin beam devices with and without cathode flux. The resulting dispersion equation reduces to the Rigrod and Lewis result in the low velocity limit. Methods for batch fabrication of GaAs diodes with evaporated contacts are described in detail.
