Abstract : Surface replicas of untreated CdS monocrystals as well as of CdS monocrystals subjected to different treatments were investigated by an electron microscope using a magnification of 12000. The treatment methods employed were annealing in a high vacuum, irradiation with a high-intensity light, and ion bombardment from an H2 gas discharge. The surfaces of the untreated crystals, as a rule, were covered with particles of one micron in size at the most. Annealing the crystals in a high vacuum generally led to a reduction of the particle density, whereas in the case of intensive illumination, an increase of the particle density was always observed. Under the influence of ion bombardment a polycrystalline cadmium layer was formed. The observed particles are interpreted as being cadmium deposits. (Author)
