Abstract : This report covers the integration of distributed ferrites into high power crossed-field devices to improve their stability and to achieve improved gain and bandwidth. An initial study of the ferrite delay line problem has been completed, ferrites had been selected for experimental study in conjunction with both the meander line and the helix at L-band frequencies, the delay lines themselves has been fabricated, and the cold test program was about to get underway. A brief investigation of lumped ferrites in conjunction with an X-band split-folded waveguide had indicated that ferrites so employed could be of value in suppressing band edge oscillations. A comprehensive set of cold test experiments was conducted using ferrite slabs distributed uniformly along the axial dimension of both the helix and the meander lines. In the case of the latter, it was necessary to locate the ferrite on the sole electrode, a factor which is somewhat disadvantageous. Results in general agreement with predictions were obtained for both lines, including isolations up to 30 db, back-to-front ratios up to 19, and forward losses generally well under 2 db and less than 1 db in many cases. Results generally were somewhat more promising in the case of the meander line, but the differences were not great. Theoretical considerations of the ferrite -CFA problem were continued during this quarter with concentration on a survey of ferrite materials with broad line-width, low loss and high temperature capability.
