Abstract : A large number of interstitial compounds and alloys with the NaCl crystal structure have been prepared and their superconducting behavior examined. It is shown that many alloyed interstitial compounds not only exhibit transition temperatures close to 18 K but are also capable of carrying a useful supercurrent density at high magnetic fields (> 1000 amps/sq cm at 70 kG). It is concluded that the major hope of raising the transition temperatures of interstitial compounds rests largely on the feasibility of obtaining materials with compositions close to the stoichiometric value. Several empirical formulae that relate transition temperatures to simple physical quantities have been evaluated in terms of the new experimental data and shown to be only partially successful in systematizing interstitial compounds. A specific heat calorimeter is described and measurements of several interstitial compounds are discussed in terms of the BCS relationship.
