Abstract : The first findings of the American and British research committees, and later that of the ICRP, have indicated that the most dangerous man-made source for the population is the medical and primarily the diagnostic x-ray dose. According to the geneticists, this may have serious consequences for future generations. On the basis of the ICRP 1958 recommendation, the maximum permissible gonad dose for the population is about 67 mrem/year. The doses sustained by the testes and ovaries were measured with a capacitive ionization chamber for each type of diagnostic x-ray examination. The measuring techniques were explained and the values compared with those of foreign authors. The gonad doses from conventional and hard radiation were compared, and the advantages of the latter in examinations of the gonad region were emphasized. It was cautioned that the doses sustained by children, especially those less than 1 year of age, are very high, and also that exposures during pregnancy and of the gonad area in general, as well as abdominal fluoroscopy, may be hazardous. The chest x-ray was emphasized in view of its high frequency of use, which can add significantly to the gonad dose. In virtue of the measured high individual gonad doses and the increasing frequency of x-ray examinations, our population sustains more than the permissilbe dose from medical sources. (Author)
