Abstract : A process for fabricating metal matrix composite materials by solid-state diffusion bonding has been developed. Processing conditions of bonding temperature, pressure and time have been optimized. Filament content, spacing and orientation, and panel size and thickness have been studied. Aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with boron and beryllium wires were produced. The strength properties in the filament direction were those predicted from the input matrix and filament strengths by the rule of mixtures. Titanium alloys reinforced with silicon carbide were produced with in-place filament strength of 260,000 psi or greater. (Author)
