Abstract : This report describes a family of computer programs that were developed to predict the dynamic stability of rotors supported by various types of journal bearings. The bearing types include cylindrical, floating ring, lobed, hybrid and pivoted-pad. The transient orbit technique was employed, and the resulting computer programs predict motions of the rotor geometric center and center of gravity with respect to the bearing shell. The orbital paths described by the motions may be studied to determine whether the system is stable or unstable. Sample solutions demonstrate the detailed information provided by this type of analysis for each of the bearing types. The effects of varying pertinent parameters are shown for sample systems, and conditions that lead to stable operation of various bearing types are examined. (Author)
